Total: [102 PL, 1,745pts]

From the tournament pack, we were playing pure Eternal War missions from Chapter Approved 2018. This was an interesting development, because it also meant that the player who WASN’T going first got to select the deployment map and their deployment zone. I think this subtle change definitely added another layer of tactics to the day, as I certainly factored this into the games that I played.

I had originally thought I would be playing T’au in round 1, more specifically “The Eight”. Unfortunately, my opponent had to drop out, and as a result my draw got changed so I ended up playing Michael, who had the list below:

Mission: Vital Intelligence
Deployment: Vanguard Strike
Player: Micheal Arnott
Army: Imperium
Command Points: 12
Points Total: 1750
Super heavy auxiliary
Shyzza the cursed Gulliman 400 (warlord)

Primaris lieutenant Matt hazzard 86 Oculus bolt with phobos armour
Redemptor dreadnaught 165 Onslaught gatling icarus rocket pod Fragstorm grenade launchers r fist
Predator 2 lascanon 1 twin
lascanon turret hunter killer missile 186
Predator 2 lascanon 1 twin lascanon turret hunter killer missile 186
Predator 2 lascanon 1 twin lascanon turret hunter killer missile 186

I should add as well that this was using the “old” marine codex, as the new book was released on the day of the tournament. I did not go first, and using Bobby G’s rerolls Michael destroyed a Nightwing and a Crimson Hunter Exarch in his first turn with ease. The threat of so many predators with Guilliman, even with my modifiers was strong enough to put some serious pain on me. He hung back his dreadnought in the early portion of the game to benefit from re-rolls, which meant that not all of his weapons were able to get into range. Even his intercessors with rifles were a threat to my bikes with Guilliman conferring rerolls. I decided fairly early on that I was going to concentrate more on trying to table Michael than playing the mission (this was awarded as a win in this rules pack) – if I was too defensive i’m pretty sure that the predators and the dreadnought would have made quick work of me. On my first turn I replied by killing two predators, and a few marines. We then basically started exchanging kills, and eventually I came on top of the war of attrition. One particular highlight was my Autarch charging in bravely to try and finish one of the Librarians…. but only of course, after his shuriken catapults had softened him up! At the end I basically engineered it to leave Guilliman alive alone on turn 4 – my reasoning was that if I was able to kill him and he got back up, i’d have one more turn to try and kill him before the end of turn 5, which is exactly what ended up happening. So after a somewhat hairy start, I’d managed to wipe out the ultramarines and get 20-0 for the round. One added detail is just to describe Michael’s army – i failed a bit taking photos, but it was all samurai themed. The Guilliman was like a huge Bushido warrior, with a mini godzilla clawing at the ankles! It was very cool.

From hearing some of the other results, I had a rather large fear that i’d possibly end up playing Bruce Wade, and his horrific flying Orion gunship of doom (which I was told on good authority was as scary as a flying knight). I did’t end up playing this, but instead I ended up playing against another list which I didn’t fancy my chances against. I played Allan Dowie, who i’ve played at Dwarf’s winter war before in a battle of White Scars vs Grot Confederacy! Allan was using a list with an impressive amount of teeth this time:

This was going to be a challenge – so much armour, and a high number of rerollable random shots due to the excellent catachan attribute. Allan wisely picked Hammer and Anvil, wanting to make the most out of the range on his Leman Russes and basilisks. As I was going first, i deployed everything on the line, hoping that I would at least be able to kill the hellhounds, as they had the ability to ignore my modifiers. The dice gods saw fit to scorn me, and Allan seized the initiative!

Allan gleefully rammed the hellhounds down my throat, and torched a bunch of bikes in the process. He also used the bikes to thin out the bikes a little too, and I had probably lost around 9 by this stage. The big tanks then opened up on the flyers, and with the modifiers I had available, they mostly escaped unscathed. After this I pushed forward, taking out the hellhounds and all the non character bikes. I was able to put a few wounds on the nearest basilisk as well. This was mostly the theme of the battle – I slowly pushed Allan back into his deployment zone, when I was eventually able to tie up 2 basilisks in combat with a straggling squad of windriders. This allowed me to focus fire on other threats, and keep harassing the tanks with pitiful melee, but crucially denying them their firepower. Once I had broken into his lines that was pretty much the end of the game – but I had certainly paid a heavy toll on my army to reach the other end of the table. Allan’s tanks kept rolling super hot thanks to his detachment attribute (so many double 1s became double 4s or higher), and i’d have absolutely been finished if not for the modifiers on the flyers. With another tabling, I had won 20-0 again, and was absolutely stunned. At least I could go home with some pride intact before the final round!

The final round was against the impressive Dave Murray, and for the third time in a row I was facing off against the Imperium (who seemed to be on display in great force this tournament). Dave had tabled my travelling Dad Buddy Paul in the last round, and that made me nervous – as a fellow new dad, Paul had much more game time than me, so I didn’t fancy my chances!

I was not going first this time, so considering the huge enemy force I was facing (plus the nightmare fuel that is the Krast Crusader), I opted to go for hammer and anvil, and also managed to pick a side that would give me good control of the objectives, forcing Dave to commit to the centre of the table if he wanted to score at least 2 points a turn. He deployed the knight on the line, his mortars out of sight, and then a good number of his guardsmen and sentinels also on the line. I was able to shield all my ground forces in the safety of my flyer bubble, meaning that his Smash Captain (still, after a 6 months absence from the game in my opinion is one of the scariest units ever) couldn’t get to the bikes on his first turn.

I didn’t seize, and the first turn kinda went the way I expected it to. He moved up the table with the knight and tried to put wounds on flyers (I would perhaps have put the gatling gun into bikes), but didn’t really do any damage. The smash captain landed using the redeploy stratagem, and then he also popped the stratagem for a 3D6 charge. He charged 2 flyers (and was impervious to overwatch), smashed a crimson hunter easily and then wounded a nightwing by fighting again with the same captain.

It wasn’t a particularly harsh turn on me, but If I didn’t kill both the captain and the Knight, I was going to be in for a world of hurt. I broke out of my castle, and lined up my bikes to profit from the stratagem for -1AP and also the Autarch rerolls. I positioned my Farseer as well so that he couldn’t deny Doom on the knight, which I also managed to successfully cast. Then everything unloaded into it. Dave of course rotated his shields, so it took all the flyers, plus a full unit of scatter bikes to bring it down. Thankfully this left me with 2 full units of bikes to play with. I allocated a full unit against the smash captain – and I did kill him, but only just. I then got to work on thinning out Dave’s hordes of infantry. The game sort of turned into this meat grinder attrition battle at this point. He had to keep advancing into the centre of the table in order to keep up with the scoring, and I had to keep trying to push him back and keep him off the centre. Eventually I was able to make a break in the hordes of infantry and take the 3rd objective and snatch the lead. From here I was able to push Dave back further and continue building my lead, and if I had gotten another turn I could have tabled him I think, but as it stood the game ended with a 12-8 win to me. A really great tactical game, tightly contested right up until the death.

So…. with 3 wins and a superior Tie-Breaker score to Dave Hughman…. I won the tournament! I was literally emotional. I was not lying when I said that I hadn’t opened my case since February, and to come back to an event and win on my first attempt felt really good. It just goes to show how busted Eldar are I guess! Thanks again to all of my opponents, thanks to Paul for doing the drive to Dunfermline, and finally huge thanks to the two John’s, and the whole of DWARF for once again putting on a fantastic event.

Thanks for reading!
